Mandla ‘Spikiri’ Mofokeng is a pioneering kwaito musician, singer and producer, born and bred in Meadowlands, Soweto. He started his career as a dancer under the tutelage of the legendary Sello “Chicco” Twala. Later, he formed the disco group MM De Luxe with friend M’du Masilela, and after recording two successful albums in 1989 and 1990, the group became the pioneers of what is today known as township kwaito.

A founding member of the seminal kwaito group Trompies, which has gone on to produce albums regarded as classics of the genre, ‘Spikiri’ is also a founding member and director of Kalawa Jazzmee Records, a hugely influential record label that has released albums by artists such as Boom Shaka, Bongo Muffin, B.O.P (Brothers of Peace), Thebe and Alaska.

Revered also for his experience and successes as a producer, Mandla ‘Spikiri’ Mofokeng has produced for the likes of Jakarumba, MaWillies, Tokollo and Bongo Maffin, most recently co-producing award winning albums by Mafikizolo and Kabelo.

He is highly respected in the music industry, not only for his work with kwaito stars, but also for his diverse music talents. This together with his studies in piano and music engineering, have made Mandla ‘Spikiri’ Mofokeng a sought-after name for collaborations and to produce records for many artists from varied genres, including the legendary Bra Hugh Masikela and Moses Molelekwa.
